running out of time Listen to sample
This song comes from a hitchhiking experience I had in Montana in the late ‘70s. I was trying to get down highway 200 from Lincoln to Missoula early one Saturday morning, and I was picked up by a young guy driving an old grain truck with extra license plates laying on the floor in front of the passenger seat. He was pretty uncommunicative at first, but soon admitted to me that rig was stolen, and that he’d let me out anywhere I wanted if I wasn’t comfortable with that. It was a ride, there wasn’t much traffic that morning, and it didn’t feel like a threatening situation, so counter to any otherwise normal measure of common sense, I agreed to stick with the ride. Over the course of an hour or so, this kid – he was probably about my age at the time – gave me his story, which revolved around his attempts to live a relatively quiet, normal life, but something would always go sour on him, and his response would be to steal a car, drive somewhere new, and start over. This particular adventure of his had started the day before in Minnesota, and he was in the process of driving this old truck until it ran out of gas, the location or timing of which was not to be predicted very well since the gas gauge was broken. The truck did eventually run out of gas somewhere in the Blackfoot canyon, and we went our different ways. Years later, I was reminiscing on this somewhat unique encounter, and this song is the result. I’ve always wondered what became of that kid – I imagine he’s probably rotting in jail somewhere. Either that or he’s a financial advisor.
Will – guitar, harmonica, vocals, harmony vocalsLyrics:
I picked you up along the road, in a stolen rig with a heavy load
Just thought you should understand
Where it is I’m coming from, I’m not any shiftless bum
Please – just take me as I am
Chorus:
I Can’t relax I’m feeling tense
Feels like I’m sitting on some fence
Nothing ever seems to makes much sense, in my mind
Keep on running ‘til I run out of time
I’m just a normal guy, I see things through normal eyes
Trying to lead my normal life
But as things go from day to day, things just get in the way
And turn into a bunch of strife
Just trying to keep things up to par
I’m not trying to reach for any star
But a stolen rig will only go so far, and then run out of gas
And it’s so hard to make the good times last
I don’t try to hurt noone, but sometimes when you run
People get in the way
All the friends I left behind, I try to keep out of my mind
They’re better off that way
Chorus
Bridge:
Nobody ever had to tell me life would not be fair
With moments of despair, always wondering where I belong
Based on all I’ve been through, I’m not sure what I’ve gotta do
To find what I’m looking for
The more I look the more it seems, all I’ve got are half-baked dreams
Surely, there’s something more
Chorus
Now you’ve heard me plead my case, just look me in the face
And tell me what you see
I’ve always heard the theme that people aren’t always what they seem
I sure hope that’s the case with me
Chorus
