the only tune Liam played Listen to sample
Over the years, we've developed the habit of taking a road trip every spring to the Alaska Folk Festival held in Juneau, Alaska. That involves a 670 mile drive through interior Alaska and Yukon, Canada to Haines, Alaska, followed by a 5-hour ferry ride. When our son, Liam, was about 8 years old, he had just started trying to play a little guitar and mandolin. The day before we left on this trip, I showed Liam how to play "Boil them cabbage down", a fine but relatively simple fiddle tune, on the mandolin. Once the drive started, Liam figured out that the back seat of a minivan was perfectly suitable for playing his new tune, which he did. The whole trip. All 15 hours in the car. It seemed only natural to put a few new words to this old tune. Our friend Jock Irons was with us on this trip, so he's always quick to point out that he thinks he made a contribution to this one also.
Will – guitar, fiddle, vocals, harmony vocalsLyrics:
Car is packed, the tank is full, we’re all climbing in
Wait a minute, make sure we don’t forget the mandolin
We're going down to Juneau, it's the the springtime of the year
Things are fine except for that ringing in our ears
Chorus:
Boil them cabbage down, boys, pass that mando round
The only tune that Liam played was boil them cabbage down
Delta’s just behind us and Tok is on the way
And still it’s just that one tune that we hear Liam play
Crossing over the border, the man looks us up and down
Liam’s in the back seat playing boil them cabbage down
Chorus
Sometime in the afternoon, near Destruction Bay
Liam’s got the mandolin, and he still wants to play
Don’t know if we can make it, or if we can survive
With Liam playing mandolin on a 15-hour drive
Chorus
Driving over the pass, on the road to Haines,
We just grin and bear it, and try not to complain
The end of the journey, the light is getting dim
Molly finally speaks up, and says “Kill that mandolin!”
Chorus
