funky old town Listen to sample
I have been going to the Alaska Folk Festival for 29 years and I still think it's one of the best music parties to be had anywhere. Besides being a great showcase of Alaskan music, the festival itself has a wonderfully accepting feel to it. The town of Juneau itself adds a lot to the atmosphere of the event, with the narrow hilly streets, rainy weather, and cozy confines lending themselves to a great array of late-night jam sessions within easy staggering distances of each other. This song was written at the festival some years ago, and is my little tribute.
Will – guitar, fiddle, harmonica, vocals, harmony vocalsLyrics:
All winter long, we see friends that we know
We all ask each other, are you going to Juneau?
So when the weather warms up and the snow starts to go
We get on the road and we head for Juneau
Chorus:
How do we end up in this funky old town
In the middle of the night with the rain falling down?
There’s people to meet, tunes to play again
It all boils down to music and friends
When we were younger and the things that we’d do
Some that were foolish, some that were new
Now that we’re older, our hair streaked with gray
We do the same damn things, what can I say
Chorus
It’s all the same people, it’s all the same tunes
It’s all the same parties, in the same little rooms
There's no way to explain it with any words that I know
How in the spring of the year we end up in Juneau
Chorus
As I’m walking home in the gray morning light
Fragments of tunes I’ve been hearing all night
Are still in my head everywhere that I go
It happens every time that I come to Juneau
Chorus
