house of cards Listen to sample
It seems the world is always full of crises, but it feels like recent years have had more than their share. A co-worker of mine, Jake Sprankle, and I have often commented on the feeling that it sometimes feels like the whole mess could unravel at any time, that the whole system is as fragile as a "house of cards". This song was written in June of 2008, when the price of oil was in the process of peaking around $142 per barrel, Bear Stearns had recently collapsed, and those feelings of fragility were really coming to a head. Little did I know that a few months later in the fall of 2008 things would really start crashing - if I had known, maybe I would have handled my retirement funds a little differently. Jake's contribution to this song is the reference to reloading.
Will – guitar, vocalsLyrics:
I'm just trying to live my American dream
But things are pulling apart at the seams
And no one can tell me what it means
Or where it’s bound to go
So I just put the blinders on
If this were chess I’m just a pawn
Just trying to keep on keeping on
And have something left to show
Chorus:
House of cards, house of cards
Who’d of thought life could be so hard
Anywhere but my back yard
The whole world’s just a house of cards
I ain’t no financier
I just go by what I hear
The markets ruled by greed and fear
And what the Fed Reserve might say
But a bunch of folks out on the fringe
Are not involved in this gluttonous binge
Read the news and only cringe
And live life day to day
Chorus
Burning oil is out of style
At 142 bucks a barrel
Just keep on going and all the while
It seems we’re slow to learn
But carbon-neutral where we’re supposed to be
And I can try but it seems to me
When winter comes and it starts to freeze
Give me something I can burn
Chorus
Bridge:
Find a horse to get down the road
Time to learn how to reload
Plant potatoes where the lawn was mowed
Lock the door where the wood is stowed
Money comes and money goes
But it’s just a bunch of ones and Os
What it’s worth no one really knows
Just gotta get your pile
So keep on spending, buy that stuff
there's no one to tell you when you’ve got enough
Just pile it on when times are tough
In the grand American style
Chorus
